What Is EMDR?

Your brain is incredibly smart, and it naturally wants to heal. Think about what happens when you get a physical cut: your body immediately goes to work to close and heal the wound. But if a piece of debris gets stuck in that cut, the healing blocks, and it stays painful.

Your mind works the exact same way. When you experience a deeply stressful or traumatic event, your brain's natural processing system can get overwhelmed. The memory gets "stuck" in your nervous system in its raw, unfiltered form. When this happens, old memories don't just feel like the past, they feel like they are happening right now in your body.

If you are experiencing nightmares, sudden flashbacks, memory gaps, or intense emotional reactions that feel way too big for the current moment, your brain isn't broken. It's just blocked. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a specialized therapy designed to gently remove that block, freeing your nervous system to finish the healing it started.

How Does EMDR Work?

Deep inside your brain, memories are stored in interconnected neural networks. When a traumatic event is blocked, it stays trapped with all the original pictures, negative self-beliefs, and distressing physical sensations attached to it. Every time a modern trigger presses on that unhealed memory, your body reacts with fear or confusion.

EMDR targets the root memory itself, rather than just forcing you to cope with your reactions. By utilizing Bilateral Stimulation (gentle, rhythmic eye movements, handheld taps, or tones), we engage both sides of your brain while keeping you safely anchored in the present moment. This dual focus creates a relaxed, parasympathetic state, similar to what happens during REM sleep, allowing your brain to safely process and store the memory where it belongs: in the past.

A Different Path to Healing: Unlike traditional talk therapies, EMDR doesn't require you to describe the distressing event in meticulous detail, challenge your thoughts, endure extended exposure, or do hours of homework between sessions.

What to Expect: The 8-Phases of Healing

EMDR is a structured, collaborative process where you are entirely in control. As your clinician, I am simply a facilitator to guide your nervous system's natural capacity to heal. We safely navigate this together through eight intentional phases:

  • Mapping Your Story (History & Planning): We identify the past memories keeping you stuck, the current situations triggering your distress, and the positive blueprints you need to move forward.

  • Building Your Internal Anchor (Preparation): Before we look at any hard memories, we focus on building calming resources and stabilization tools so your nervous system feels completely safe.

  • Pinpointing the Target (Assessment): We gently identify the specific image, the negative belief you hold about yourself (like "I am unsafe"), the emotions, and the physical sensations connected to the memory.

  • Clearing the Distress (Desensitization): Using bilateral movements, we tax your working memory, calming your body's orienting reflex and lowering your distress level until the memory loses its painful grip.

  • Rewriting Your Self-Worth (Installation): We strengthen a new, positive belief about yourself (like "I am safe now" or "I am worthy"), weaving it deeply into the memory network.

  • Checking Your Body (Body Scan): We scan your physical body from head to toe to ensure all lingering physical tension, tightness, or distress tied to that memory is completely gone.

  • Returning to Calm (Closure): Every session ends with you feeling grounded, safe, and emotionally secure before you leave.

  • Tracking Progress (Reevaluation): At the start of our next session, we look at your progress to ensure the healing remains solid and steady.

As these old memory networks finally unlock and integrate, your sense of self-worth shifts naturally. You don't have to force yourself to think positively—increased self-esteem, confidence, and completely new, life-enhancing behaviors follow automatically. You are finally released from the limitations of your past.
